KINEMAN KARMA win ‘BEST INDIGENOUS ACT’ AWARD

On 22 February KINEMAN KARMA were awarded the 2005 BEST INDIGENOUS ACT AWARD at the South Australian Music Industry Awards held at Dunstone Park, Stepney South Australia.

Speaking after the event while rehearsing for the FUSE FESTIVAL, founder of the band Ngarrindjeri songwriter John ‘Ringo’ Rigneys comments:

we are especially proud and overwhelmed being the only Aboriginal or
Reggae act nominated under any category this year in the awards. And to win this
with such recognised acts from other world Indigenous cultures as fellow
nominees is an honour, and hope this opens more doors for Aboriginal
bands.

INDIGENOUS & REGGAE BANDS IN FUSE

For the first time local Indigenous & Reggae bands are featured in the FUSE FESTIVAL – Australian Music Industry Conference, Seminars & Showcase gigs 1 -2 March 2006.

The Fuse Festival & Conference is the only Australian annual live contemporary music industry gathering and is designed to assist local artists to build their live performance careers in Australia and overseas.

The event will bring together artists, promoters, managers, publishers, A&R representatives, media and live music lovers to network, share their knowledge and discuss the topics at the forefront of the music industry.

Leading international Music Industry speakers from the USA, UK and Australia are participating and 30+ bands from around Australia are attending.

The Fuse Festival and Conference is now being hosted by the Adelaide Fringe Inc. and will occur as a part of the Fringe Festival on 1st & 2nd March 2006.

MOORE BLACK & THE ORGANIC ROOTS

Moore hails from Nigeria, his songwriting & arrangements are an eclectic & vibrant mix of Calypso/Samba Reggae. Performing across Europe in the 1990’s he now fronts the culturally diverse Reggae band ‘Organic Roots’.
The ‘Organic Roots’ band hail from all corners of the globe – Japan, Africa, Europe.

Moore Black was born & raised in Nigeria (West Africa) where music and dance are part of everyday life. Writing prolifically from a very young age, Moore's lyrics describe cultural, social, political & environmental issues with his unique seductive stamp on Calypso /Samba Reggae genre.

Moore's first studio experience was in 1983, and he left Nigeria for Europe in the early 90's, and began working as a street musician. He then landed work in various clubs as an MC, and finally forming a Reggae band Stir it Up to tour constantly around Greece & was in great demand throughout summers around the Greek Islands. Moore also Fronted several reggae bands in Europe in the 90's,

Since arriving in Australia in 1999, Moore formed his first Reggae outfit Moore Black & the Reggae Rhythms brought his brand of Reggae to the local pub circuit.In 2003 Moore's song "Dance mi Ragga" made it in the top 10 "world music" category for the "Musicoz" awards (Australia wide).

In 2004 he assembled the band Organic Roots the name inspired from such issues that need order & purifying. Serendipity delivered a culturally diverse collection of musicians bring a wealth of talent to the ‘Organic Root’s lineup.

Nowadays, Moore has fused his own style of Samba, Calypso, & Reggae
with a portion of Dub and Nyabingi ( African drumbeats, Chanting, Rap & Spoken word).
Moore Black & The Organic Roots transports a Conscious & Spiritual message wrapped in material sound, hey leave the crowd in a "feel good" mood bringing a dynamic energy to wherever they perform

Mika Wakisaka - percussion
A Japanese healer/teacher with twist of dreadlocks, residing in Adelaide.
Through many fields of art, she expresses joy of life and happiness.

Adriana Francescangeli - percussionist & drummer.
She has had extensive performance experience, specializing in African & Latin rythms, she was a previous member of "Sabor Latino"

Ezio Budon - Bass
Our creative and talented bass player, Ezio was playing in a reggae band "The Roots family" in Venice, Italy before moving to Australia and joining "Organic Roots"

Michael Angelo – percussion/drums
An ex-member of Latin band " Expressionist " & drum teacher

Vashti Tyrrell - Saxophone
Studied jazz at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. She has worked with the Australian Jazz Quartet, local Adelaide hip-hop outfit Sukatash and Adelaides's own Marmalade Circus.

Evan Whetter – Keyboards
You can hear the funky groove based keyboards of Adelaide based Evan Whetter on recordings of many well known bands from The Hilltop Hoods Through to The Liars Bench. Evan Whetter first appeared in the Australian music scene with Funk trio Second Dimension, and went on to become a founding member of the live hip-hop/acid jazz band Sukatash. Touring with Avra Vellis, Second Dimension and Sukatash, Evan Whetter also has appeared live with artists as diverse as Tommy Emmanuel and James Morrison through to Mental As Anything, George the band, Harper, Brian Ruez, Cat Empire and The Hilltop Hoods. Having completed His studies in Jazz Piano at the University of Adelaide, Evan Whetter currently resides and works in Adelaide as a session musician.

KINEMAN KARMA … Indigenous reggae

Kineman (Ngarrindjeri) - BLACK for the people of this land, the spirits of our ancestors, our (world) Black culture’s struggle for true freedom.

Karma - Positivism, energy, togetherness. One circle of people creating peace through Reggae Music (John Rigney 2004)

John Rigney formed KINEMAN KARMA in early 2002 writing songs to document traditional and contemporary Ngarrindjeri culture and political issues.

His musical vision: to form a world class reggae band as a platform to deliver the strong messages and showcase the talents of some of South Australia’s leading Indigenous musicians. The songwriting, arrangements and line-up has evolved into a powerful cultural and artistic mix. Having grown up on a staple musical diet of No Fixed Address, Mixed Relations, ScrapMetal, John ‘Ringo’ Rigney was also surrounded by some of the greatest musical characters in the Ngarrindjeri community. Hearing them document Ngarrindjeri life, culture and issues with a guitar, using hilarious anecdotes that carried powerful messages of wisdom in country & western style.

He was a founding member of Ngarrindjeri band Rough Image and had always known how music is the most effective vehicle to communicate political, cultural, protest messages to and educate the wider community about Ngarrindjeri issues – but laced with plenty of humour. His songwriting and arranging style is infused with an eclectic mix of Roots & Rock Steady/Reggae, Ska with Country & Western and Jazz influences.

KINEMAN KARMA have a huge original song list infused with plenty of social-justice, environmental and cultural messages of reconciliation – laced with Ngarrindjeri style humour and energetic covers of No Fixed Address, Bob Marley, Toots & The Maytals, UB40.
